Statements on sharia courts incite extremism - Russian Prosecutor General's Office

Moscow, April 27, Interfax - Experts have concluded that lawyer Dagir Khasavov's statements on the REN TV channel incite religious enmity and extremist activity.

Earlier, Khasavov told one of the federal television channels that Russian Muslims are reluctant to go to secular courts and that for this reason sharia courts should be introduced. Otherwise there might be large-scale bloodshed, he argued.

"An inquiry conducted by the Russian Institute of Culturology has established that statements made by speakers in a REN TV report aim to incite hatred and enmity and to humiliate a person or a group of persons because of their attitude to Islam and can be qualified as calls for extremists activity," Marina Gridneva, the official spokeswoman for the Prosecutor General's Office, has told Interfax.

The above video report propagates the "exclusive superiority of individuals according to their religious identity," she said.

The inquiry has submitted its conclusions to the Investigative Committee's Main Investigative Department for Moscow for subsequent legal assessment.

Violations of the federal law on attorneys' activity and the Lawyers' Code of Ethics by Khasavov have been reported to the Justice Ministry's Moscow Department and may cost him his lawyer's status.

Simultaneously, the Moscow Prosecutor's Office issued a warning to REN TV General Director Alexander Orjonikidze over exposed violations of the federal anti-extremist legislation, Gridneva said.
