30 May 2007Mistresses to be legally banned in China
Beijing, May 30, Interfax - Some members of local parliament of the Chinese province of Goandong proposed to legally ban having mistresses, the Singtsing Bao daily reported on Wednesday.
The MPs suggested amending the current law because, they said, having mistresses and non-marital cohabitation ‘damage families of one side or both sides.’
Non-marital relations, an old tradition in China, have become popular among some Chinese businessmen and state officers in the recent years, but this tendency faces strong opposition.
For instance, Vice-Mayor of Beijing Lu Qihua and deputy chief of Chinese navy Wang Shoue were dismissed for ‘moral corruption’ last year.
According to the media, both of them had mistresses and supported their businesses using their official position.
