27 July 2007A woman in Tula afraid of encountering ‘the number of the beast’ when votes are countered electronically during elections
Tula, July 27, Interfax - A woman living in the Tula region has expressed distrust on religious grounds in the Elections State Automated System (GAS) for counting up votes electronically.
Alexander Mashkov, deputy head of the Tula Regional Election Committee, has informed Interfax that a month ago a request came to his committee from a local woman to exclude her personal data from the Elections GAS since “her personal number can contain the ‘number of antichrist’”.
In reply to the committee’s a letter of inquiry, the diocesan public relations officer, Valery Otstavnykh, stated that the Russian Orthodox Church did not share the woman’s stand and did not object to the registration of Orthodox Christians in the Elections GAS.
Mashkov also stressed that in accordance with the Russian law on elections, a citizen’s personal data can be excluded from the Elections GAS.
