01 September 2008Orthodox nunnery helps the Voronezh zoological garden find a girlfriend for a lonely donkey

Voronezh, September 1, Interfax - Zoological garden of the Culture and tourism administration of the Voronezh Region has found a companion for an Asian donkey it searched for several years thanks to an Orthodox monastery.
"Representatives of the nunnery in the village of Kostomarovo where a 10-year-old jennet lived called to the zoological garden," the zoological garden told Interfax.
The interviewee of the agency further said that a donkey of the Asian breed had lived in the menagerie for several years. "He is 12 years old and until now we couldn't find a girlfriend for him as these animals are rather rare in our latitude."
These animals require special laborious treatment, for example, their hooves should be cut regularly. They fell ill without it and this is what happened to the jennet. Then the nunnery decided to give it to the zoological garden.
"We are lucky to find a jennet of the same breed because the interbreeding between animals of different breeds is undesirable. Thus, we don't exclude a possibility that they will have descendants and our zoological garden will have new inhabitants," its representative said.
Today the animals are placed in various stalls so that "they could get used to each other."
"The jennet started eating and it shows that she is adopting at the new place. She will be moved to the male donkey soon," a staff member of the zoological garden said.
