30 January 2009Newly born lion cub named after the Patriarch Kirill at a zoo circus

Moscow, January 30, Interfax – Two lion cubs were born in the Safari zoo circus in Pyatigorsk, when the new Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia was being elected in the capital.
“We hurried to name a cub after him – Kirill (or Kira if it turns out to be a girl,)” head of the Moscow travelling circus, which is now on tour in the Caucasus, Gamlet Kasyan was quoted as saying by the Komsomolskaya Pravda daily.
Now its mother ardently guards the cubs, the cage with the newly born lions is protected from strangers and wind with an iron door.
It is curious, but the “lion” theme touched not only the 16th Moscow Patriarch, but also the Pope Benedict XVI of Rome.
A circus performance was given to the Pontiff on Wednesday after his weekly audience in Vatican. The Pope applauded to jugglers and patted the lion cub, which was carried closer to him.
After greeting the pilgrims, Benedict XVI made a special statement on the results of the Moscow Local Council.
“I have learned with great joy about the election of Metropolitan Kirill as new Patriarch of Moscow and all the Russia. I invoke upon him the light of the Holy Ghost for a generous service to the Russian Orthodox Church,” the Pope said.
