17 February 2011International dogsled race in the Kostroma Region starts from prayer in Orthodox church

Kostroma, February 17, Interfax - Participants in international dogsled race Severnaya Nadezhda (Russian for Nothern Hope - IF) that will take place from February 22 to March 2 in the Kostroma Region will receive a blessing of an Orthodox priest.
On February 21, several dozen sportsmen will come to the prayer service chaired by Hegumen Varfolomey at St. Nicholas Church in the village of Kotkishevo, race organizers told Interfax-Religion on Thusrday.
The church is located not far from the race start. It is noteworthy that it is the only church in the Neisk District that has never been closed even when the Church was prosecuted.
The prayer service will be dedicated to St. Innokenty of Irkutsk, heavenly protector of the race. The priest will give participants icons of the saint.
According to the interviewee of the agency, Orthodox prayer services traditionally precede dogsled race organized by the Race Sport Federation of the Kostroma Region and the Severnaya Nadezhda Race Sport Center.
The distance of the competitions is 230 km. The race includes six day stages and one night stage.
