01 March 2011Kamchatka priest to participate in dogsled race

Moscow, March 1, Interfax - Rector of the Parish of the Savior Not Made by Hands of the Petropavlovsk and Kamchatka Diocese priest Vladislav Revenok will participate in Russia's longest dogsled race Berengia-2011 that is to take place in the Kamchatka Territory from March 7 to 21.
Father Vladislav participates in the race equally with other racers and drives a dogsled of 12 dogs, the priest's fans told an Interfax-Religion correspondent on Tuesday.
The rector has more than once successfully ran the race: he won the eighth place in Beringia-2008, the fifth place in competitions 2009 and 2010, and the first place in the Bystrinsky Sprint-2011 race.
The distance of the race is 950 km, the route goes along the Kamchatka Territory from the Esso village to the Ossora village and its major part goes on rough terrain, so after the start the race can be accompanied only on snowmobiles and landrovers.
The dogsled race is not only a sport event, but a charitable as well: private persons, businessmen and organizations become sponsors and provide help to schools and children in frames of international charitable action Beringia to Koryakia Children.
It is not the only dogsled race in Russia where an Orthodox priest takes part. Recently another Orthodox priest blessed the participants of the international dogsled race Severnaya Nadezhda 2011 (Russian for Nothern Hope - IF) in the Kostroma Region, but then the cleric did not run the race.
