09 November 2011FEMEN activists protest in Vatican

Kiev, November 7, Interfax - Activists of the Ukrainian movement FEMEN on Sunday protested the "misogynist" policies of the church on Saint Peter's Square in the Vatican.
Two FEMEN activists were detained as they were approaching the square, FEMEN reported on its website. The movement's leader, Alexandra Shevchenko, got onto Saint Peter's Square in the Vatican and protested topless under the balcony of Pope Benedict XVI, FEMEN reported on its website.
According to Western media reports, the activists got past security to St. Peter's Basilica after the Sunday mass. One of the activists (a blonde dressed in tight jeans and a black veil covering the top part of her body) demonstrated provocative poses on the background of the basilica and the Pope's apartments.
The activist was holding a poster that said, "Free Women!" The activists were protesting "the papal patriarchal propaganda, which forces on the world a medieval concept of women and their social and cultural mission."
According to the FEMEN website, the Vatican special services dispersed the press and arrested the FEMEN journalist and a journalist from Australia.
The FEMEN activists spent more than four hours at the Rome police station and only avoided deportation under pressure from the media, FEMEN has reported.
Earlier on Saturday, FEMEN activists took part in a protest in Rome demanding an immediate resignation of Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi. The topless protesters' bodies were painted the colors of the Italian flag.
