Syrian mufti, Russian communist leader slam U.S. policies towards Damascus, Moscow
Moscow, October 29, Interfax - Syria's Grand Mufti Ahmad Badreddin Hassoun has told the leader of the Russian Communist Party, Gennady Zyuganov, about U.S. pressure his country's authorities have to face, and added that Russia, like Syria, has so far managed to withstand such pressure.
"They wanted Russia to be dependent on the dollar and euro, but President Putin was able to walk away from it," the mufti told Zyuganov at their meeting in the State Duma. "(The U.S.) is fighting against progress and culture worldwide," the Grand Mufti said. "The Americans have been trying to impose their rules everywhere and, if you follow their instructions, everyone must eat hamburgers, and McDonald's should be in every house," the guest said, to which. Zyuganov added: "вand love Condoleezza Rice and Madeleine Albright."
From the U.S. point of view, Syria must not be free in its choice: it must obey the Americans, Hassoun said.
He said that when they invaded Iraq, the Americans told the Syrian president, Bashar Al-Assad bluntly: we are now on your border so you must be with us and ban Russians from staying at the port of Tartous, and the Mediterranean Sea must be free from Russian ships.
According to the Grand mufti of Syria, Assad replied: we cooperate with Russia because we are eastern people. The sun rises in the East, and in your country it only goes down.
Hassoun thanked the Russian people for the stance it has assumed on Syria, and taking advantage of the opportunity, thanked Russia's Imperial Orthodox Palestine Society for the humanitarian aid it has provided to the Syrian people over the past three years.
For his part, Zyuganov confirmed that Russia will always maintain solidarity with the fraternal Syrian people and continue supporting and helping it. He highly praised Grand Mufti's efforts, primarily from the humanitarian point of view, and noted that if Hassoun had not been the Grand Mufti, he would have definitely been a Communist.
