A well-known Russian missionary calls upon Islamic world to adapt Shariat to modern times

Moscow, March 24, Interfax - Professor of the Moscow theological academy deacon Andrey Kurayev thinks that the news of a possible execution of an Afghan converted from Islam to Christianity supply arguments for discussing modern interpretation of the Koran standards and Shariat.

‘I see this case as a precedent for an open and honest discussion both within the Muslim world and on the level of relations between it and the non-Muslims on a possible adaptation of the Shariat standards to the present day’, Rev. Andrey told Interfax on Friday.

He remarked that ‘Islam has quite clear laws reading that a Muslim converted to another religion is subject to capital punishment’ and said further that ‘all religions are to solve the problem of “we and our past’, ‘we and our ancient canons’, but there is always a question of adapting these canons.

The interviewee called upon religious leaders to explain whether they have ‘a principle of interpretation of the old standards of the Koran and Shariat regarding modern man’.

‘For instance, we are interested not as much as in what is happening inside the Muslim community, but in their answer to the question: if someone wants to withdraw from your community, do you really think that these people are to be eliminated throughout the world nowadays? Would you outlaw them?’ Kurayev asked.
