Western countries stop identifying themselves with Christian tradition - Patriarch Kirill

Moscow, October 29, Interfax - Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia said he believes that Christian moral values in Western society have become secondary in a situation of the abundance of migrants who belong to a different religion.

"Radical changes in spiritual life occurred in the West in the past few years. Western countries have stopped identifying themselves with the Christian tradition. On the basis of the fact that not only Christians now live in the West, they have gone to the idea of society in which Christian moral values should not dominate," the patriarch said during a meeting with Franklin Graham, the head of the charity organization Samaritan's Purse and the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association (U.S.) in Moscow.

He expressed concerns that laws have been adopted in the West, including in the U.S., that have made same-sex "marriage" equal with "the natural marriage that the Lord commanded us."

"People who disagree with these laws are even subjected to repression. And the Christians who defend the eternal significance of Christian moral values are subjected to all kinds of pressure, primarily information," the patriarch said.

The patriarch said the Russian Orthodox Church has severed relations with the Christian Churches that have adopted the idea of same-sex unions and have even started ordaining people of non-traditional sexual orientation as priests and bishops and "marrying" gay couples.
