Church official suggests expanding religious education in schools to prevent terrorism
*** Metropolitan Hilarion urges 'to refuse liberal cliches'
Moscow, November 20, Interfax - Role of religion in Russian society should be strengthened, Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, head of the Synodal Department for External Church Relations, believes.
"It's time to finally give up this idea of the separation of the church from the state and school from the church, which envisages that religion should not have a direct presence in the secular educational space," the metropolitan said on Friday at a joint meeting of the Federation Council and the State Duma on counterterrorism.
He supposes that "lectures on foundations of religious culture today are more actual than ever and this experience should be expanded."
Metropolitan Hilarion believes it is necessary to accomplish work on setting up scientific branch 'theology' in secular educational space, including giving state-recognized scientific degrees on this speciality.
"In Russian context, theology, not secular and not above-confessional, which is imposed following western examples, but linked to traditional religious confessions, can become a unique platform for interaction among traditional religions of our country," Metropolitan Hilarion said.
The hierarch urges "to refuse traditional liberal cliches."
"We should not be scared of religion, but ignorance in questions of religion. We should not be afraid of our clericalism, which westerners use to frighten our public, but things which can happen if our children and our youth will be cut off from the sources of true knowledge about religion," he said.
