State Duma speaker urges European politicians to follow the example of the pope and the patriarch
Vienna, February 26, Interfax - Russian State Duma Speaker Sergey Naryshkin has said that European parliamentarians should themselves answer the question of why present-day Europe is ruining its own security and culture, including the culture of dialogue and international relations.
"I am seeing the current PA session as extremely important and hope we will not waste its potential," Naryshkin said from the tribune of the OSCE PA winter session in Vienna.
He is leading the Russian delegation at the session.
There is now much talk, and fair talk, about current challenges, the speaker said. "And yet, the key problem is not them but the lack of will to respond to these challenges efficiently," the Duma speaker said.
According to him, meeting of Patriarch Kirill and Pope Francis should become an example of readiness for interaction in spite of serious centuries-old disagreements.
"Russia and the USA has recently made a mutual statement on seizing military actions in Syria, thus making an important step in settling this crisis. And two weeks ago, there was a historic meeting between His Holiness the patriarch, head of the Russian Orthodox Church, and the pope of Rome, head of the Roman Catholic Church. This readiness to meet each other in spite of very serious, centuries-old disagreements, may and should become an example for us," Naryshkin said.
According to him, he means the dialogue on the questions that have exclusive significance for the whole human civilization and Europe bears special responsibility for it.
