Putin thanks Jewish organizations for contribution in Russia's domestic political stability
Moscow, April 19, Interfax - Russia's Jewish organizations are making a substantial contribution in the country's domestic political stability, Russian President Vladimir Putin said at a meeting with Ronald Lauder, President of the World Jewish Congress (WJC), on Tuesday.
"Russian Jewish organizations are making a substantial contribution in the cause of domestic political stability in Russia, for which we are very grateful," Putin said.
Russia maintains close regular contact with Jewish organizations, including those in Europe, he said. Judaism is one of mainstream religions in Russia, and enjoys support from the authorities, Putin said.
He also congratulated Lauder on the Jewish holiday of Passover.
For his part, Lauder said the level of anti-Semitism in Russia is minimal. He thanked the Russian leader for everything he does for the Jewish people.
Lauder recalled that, at their last meeting in 2003, the Russian president vowed to fight anti-Semitism in Russia. Lauder said Putin has fulfilled his promise, hence, the minimal level of anti-Semitism in Russia.
Meanwhile, in Europe, anti-Semitism is still raising its head, he said.
Lauder also noted Putin's help in the opening of a Jewish museum in Russia, which he considers to be one of the best in the world.
