The Russian Church official speaks for Jesus Christ Superstar rock opera
*** It is impossible to prohibit an artist to get inspiration from the Bible
Moscow, November 2, Interfax - The Moscow Patriarchate disagrees with those people who spoke to ban Jesus Christ Superstar rock opera in certain regions.
"The Church does not suppress creativity, blessing the artists, who were inspired by plots from the Gospels in their work," head of the Synodal Department for Church, Society and Media Relations Vladimir Legoyda was quoted as saying by his press service.
Commenting the address of Tumen residents to regional governor Vladimir Yakushev with the request to cancel the performance, Legoyda urged to see the difference between non-canonical and blasphemous depiction of the shrine and reminded that the mentioned rock opera led "many people to the Church", the message reads.
"The result of such creative quest does not and cannot make artists evangelists or holy fathers of the Church who worked to establish church tradition and teaching. However, works of art based on Biblical plots show us the gleam of the Christian culture," he believes.
According to the church official, these works cannot have dogmatic or canonical authority, they can give grounds for disputes and arguments, be more or less successful, you can accept them or not, but "you cannot prohibit an artist to get inspiration from the Holy Scripture."
"There is an abyss between blasphemous and non-canonical depiction of the shrine and only culturally short-sighted people fail to see it," Legoyda summed up.
