Kiev authorities refused to hold Eurovision in St. Sophia Cathedral
Kiev, November 17, Interfax - Eurovision-2017 song contest won't be hold in the territory of Sophia of Kiev national shrine, the authorities of the Ukrainian capital say.
"There won't be any official events of Eurovision-2017 in the territory of St. Sophia Square," deputy head of Kiev Administration Alexey Resnikov said at the briefing in Kiev.
According to him, the contest events will be held in the International Exhibition Center. A press center that can house up to 1,500 journalists will also be located there.
The opening ceremony will be provably held near the Mariinsky Palace in the center of the city, the official said.
As was reported, it was decided in September that the ceremony of Eurovision-2017 opening will be held in the territory of St. Sophia Cathedral as it is known abroad and listed among sites of the UNESCO world heritage.
"Today Sophia of Kiev works as a museum, not a church. So religious feelings won't be insulted," Reznikov said.
Orthodox believers protested against holding Eurovision in Sophia of Kiev. Signatures under the corresponding petition have been collected at the Kiev Council website.
