28 April 2006, 12:39Member of Hizb ut-Tahrir convicted in Moscow
Moscow, April 28, Interfax - A Moscow court has convicted Sardorbek Siddikov and sentenced him to one year in jail for membership in the outlawed international terrorist organization Hizb ut-Tahrir al-Islami (the Islamic Party of Liberation), the press service of the office of the city's prosecutor told Interfax.
Siddikov, who claims to have been an active member of Hizb ut-Tahrir al-Islami since 1997, said he was aware that the organization was designated as a terrorist one and outlawed by the Russian authorities in 2003.
The man, however, "regularly received and distributed printed materials promoting the ideas of Hizb ut-Tahrir al-Islami," the press service said.
The materials circulated by Siddikov contained radical and separatist views and called for the establishment of a theocratic Islamic state in Russia, it said.
The organization sought to achieve its goals "through forcing the entire population to convert to Islam and possibly using violent methods to overthrow the constitutional regime, including terror as a form of its political struggle," the press service said. |
