05 May 2006, 11:42Moscow Patriarchate official warns against threat of 'liberal totalitarianism' fraught with 'nuclear war of civilizations'
Vienna, May 5, Interfax - The Russian Orthodox Church warns against a threat of 'new liberal totalitarianism', which needs to be avoided.
'Liberals often tell us: the train of globalization, integration, new world order is departing, and we have the last chance to jump in the last door of the last car. But we would sooner ask today: Do you know where this train is going? It may be heading for a precipice', Archpriest Vsevolod Chaplin, vice-chairman of the Moscow Patriarchate Department for External Church Relations, said at the Conference 'Give a Soul to Europe. The Mission and Responsibility of the Churches' held in Vienna.
'It seems this question cannot be answered today by either the engine-driver or traffic controllers in charge of the processes of economic and political globalization', the priest added.
In his opinion, the time has come for 'all of us - people in East and West, North and South, Orthodox, Catholic, Muslim, Jewish, agnostic, people of other faiths and conviction - to try together to see to it that people could follow various routes according to various schedules in various trains, while maintaining the discipline of traffic and showing mutual respect'.
He stated his conviction that 'only in this way shall we be able to avoid a new liberal totalitarianism fraught with universal resistance and nuclear war between civilizations. Only in this way shall we preserve the world in peace and harmony, the freedom of individuals, nations and religious communities, as well as social systems formed by them in accordance with their will and their mission'.
