17 September 2018, 11:32Metropolitan Hilarion accuses U.S. of deliberately destroying Russian Orthodox Church
Moscow, September 17, Interfax - Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, the head of the Synodal Department for External Church Relations, believes that the United States is interested in the weakening of the Russian Orthodox Church.
"America is interested in the weakening of the Russian Orthodox Church, because, as Zbigniew Brzezinski, well-known U.S. political scientist in his day and consultant to several presidents, used to say, following the collapse of the Soviet Union, main force in the former Soviet Union, which U.S. must destroy, is the Russian Orthodox Church. This is what is happening now," the hierarch said on the Church and the World television program on the Rossiya 24 TV channel.
It is "completely obvious" that the U.S. administration is behind the actions of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, "in fact, the U.S. side is open about that," Metropolitan Hilarion said.
"The U.S. ambassador constantly offers consultations to Mr. Poroshenko, another U.S. ambassador often visits Patriarch Bartholomew, the connection is very close there," he said.
However, currently there are no religious leaders, who could unite Ukrainians, in Ukraine, besides Metropolitan Onufry, Metropolitan Hilarion said.
Some alternative figure, allegedly capable of uniting all Orthodox Christian Ukrainians, will be nominated at "this unifying synod," which the exarchs invited by Constantinople to Ukraine are suggesting to convene, he said. "But there is no such figure, such figure only exists in the canonical Church, it is His Beatitude Metropolitan Onufry," he said.
