Putin attends sanctification ceremony for foundation stone of military's main church at Patriot Park
Patriot Park (Moscow Region), September 20, Interfax - Russian President Vladimir Putin has attended the sanctification of the foundation stone of the main church of the Russian Armed Forces, which is scheduled to be built by the 75th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War in Patriot Park in the Moscow Region.
Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu and Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia attended the ceremony together with Putin.
The president described the laying of the foundation stone as an important event in Russia's spiritual life.
"Today the first stone will be laid in the foundation of the Church of the Resurrection of Christ, which is dedicated to the victory of our people in the Great Patriotic War, and which will become the main church of the Armed Forces and another symbol of our unbreakable national traditions, our faithfulness to the memory of our ancestors and their undertakings for the sake of our fatherland," he said.
It is a holy duty of each Russian citizen to remember and honor those who gave their lives for the fatherland and cultivate a grateful memory in their descendants, Putin said.
The armed forces are the primary factor preserving the freedom, independence, and sovereignty of Russia, Patriarch Kirill said.
"We know that Russia never wages and has not waged wars of conquest, Russia supports its armed forces, understanding that at a hard moment it is the armed forces that will protect its sovereignty and the historical fate of our people. This is why it is difficult to overestimate the role and significance of Russian warriors," the patriarch said.
At the end of the ceremony, a miniature church and an adjacent area was shown to the president, after which he was shown the paintings of the church's side-altars, the area under the cupola, its frontals, and frescos inside the church.
Putin was told that the church will be decorated with bronze ornaments on its facade and inside.
