03 October 2018, 10:39Ukrainian Orthodox Church urges Patriarch Bartholomew not to mix church with electoral bloc
Moscow, October 3, Interfax - The Ukrainian Orthodox Church has reminded Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople that it is not the same thing to establish a Church and electoral bloc.
"How will these spiteful, deceitful, sacrilegious [representatives of dissent] yelling "death to enemies!" Poroshenko and Bartholomew put together a new Church of Christ, a Church of salvation, love and brotherhood? Assemble, vote, "raise your hands, put them down", read out a letter [tomos], register - and there you are! It would make a horse laugh. One can set up one more electoral bloc that way, a political, public organization but by no means a Church," head of the press service of UOC Vasily Anisimov said in an interview with Interfax-Religion.
He said this is done with foreign church interference against which Ukrainian President Pyotr Poroshenko fights so stubbornly.
UOC said that thousand-year-old foundations, canons and rules "cannot be reworked for the needs of the day and to benefit unlawful election projects and intrigues of the Ukrainian authorities" because "any secular power is temporary and the Church is eternal." |
