Orthodox Church, Vatican should work to preserve Christianity in Europe - Metropolitan Kirill
Rome, May 20, Interfax - The Moscow Patriarchy and the Vatican should work together on preserving the Christian faith in Europe, Metropolitan Kirill of Smolensk and Kaliningrad, a Moscow Patriarchate spokesman, said at a press conference at the Russian Embassy in Rome.
"I had the opportunity to meet with the pope, and we had a very substantial conversation about prospects for the development of our relations. The pope's position coincides with the position of our patriarch: the time has come for our churches to work together, primarily, to preserve Christianity in Europe," Metropolitan Kirill said.
Metropolitan Kirill said this would be especially important today, "when Europe is about to abandon its Christian roots."
Metropolitan Kiril also praised his meeting with the pope.
"I would like to express my satisfaction with the meetings that I had with the pope and hierarchy of the Roman Catholic Church in Rome," he said.
Metropolitan Kirill said he spoke with Benedict XVI in the Italian language, but with an interpreter's assistance.
"We spoke in Italian, but with an interpreter's assistance. At such meetings, you have to use the help of a language specialist rather than count on your modest abilities," he said.
