Patriarch Kirill calls on State Duma to improve protection of personal data
Moscow, February 1, Interfax - Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia said he is concerned about people's insufficient protection with respect to modern technology.
"The Moscow Patriarchate continues to get many appeals that indicate people's concern about the comprehensive introduction of digital technologies and the tendency toward the replacement of all existing documents and means of identification with electronic analogues," the patriarch said at the Christmas Parliamentary Meetings in the State Duma.
Believers consider it important to draw attention to the imperfect protection of personal data from abuse, he said.
"Naturally, it is necessary to use the achievements of technological progress for the good of society, but it is unacceptable to forget about those people who refuse to use them for various reasons," the patriarch said.
Electronic data is often stolen and leaked, leading to real tragedies, he said.
"The devil always uses two human strivings to tempt people: the striving for pleasure and the striving for convenience. Gadgets are so convenient! We can no longer imagine our life without these gadgets," the patriarch said.
This leads to "absolutely uncontrolled dissemination of information using these gadgets to addresses we know nothing about, and eventually, technically, scientists already say, it will be easy to concentrate all these things in some one place where this global information will be accumulated," he said.
"I assure you, [it won't be] in our country," the patriarch said.
"Sometimes people think we're crazy when we say something, they smile condescendingly, thinking, what can you expect from these old-regime people, they're all against progress. [...] But it is perfectly obvious that modern progress represents a danger, primarily to people's freedom, because true freedom does not involve global control over the human personality. Global control involves an apocalyptic prospect of the development of mankind," he said.
When we say on the basis of the Holy Scripture that the Antichrist will come, we mean a system of global control from one center and even one person," the patriarch said, adding that the Church is for true human freedom, not imagined freedom, so devices that could potentially limit this freedom or already do so concern it.
