Patriarch Kirill compares abortion practice to pagan sacrifices
Moscow, October 18, Interfax - The choice between the number of children and the quality of their life that many couples face is a false choice, Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia said.
"Limiting birth to receive materialistic benefits looks like a rudiment of pagan sacrifices," the patriarch said in his report at the World Russian People's Council held in Moscow on Friday.
"Our distant ancestors, on whom the light of Christian truth did not shine, believe that they could get something valuable, resolve a specific material problem by sacrificing the life of anyone close to them," he said.
"It looks totally terrible to the people of our time, but is it not like the logic of relatives who try to convince a woman to have an abortion for the sake of her career?" the patriarch said. "The first human right is the right to life, and cancelling this right makes all other rights pointless," the patriarch said.
"We are calling to defend this fundamental right to life from the moment of conception and the right of birth. And when a family makes plans for life and when the state develops a long-term strategy, we are calling to prioritize the right to life, including the right to life of those who have not been born yet, over all other rights, the right to a calm rest, a successful career, the right to buy valuable things and other various rights of the people who now live," he said.
The patriarch admitted that people who have decided not to have children are really richer, but said he doubts that it makes them happier. "Just think, what is more important to you: to have more expensive things around you or to have more dear people? I believe the answer to this question is obvious to an overwhelming majority of people," the patriarch said.
The World Russian People's Assembly, which was created on the initiative of the current patriarch of the Russian church in 1993, is devoted to the issue of preservation of the people of Russia. The session began with the demonstration of a modern video of the choice made by a girl who is thinking of marriage. The video drew a keen response from the audience.
