03 March 2020, 18:51Reference to God in Constitution doesn't encroach on atheists' views - ombudsman
Moscow, March 3, Interfax - The inclusion of the reference to God in the Constitution is addressed to all religious denominations and does not encroach on atheists' views, Russian Human Rights Commissioner Tatyana Moskalkova said.
"Today, the society's demand for the strengthening of the moral foundations and everything that is associated with the concepts of justice and good and evil has a special value for the modern times," Moskalkova told journalists on Tuesday.
"Perhaps, the appeal to faith and the moral foundations is worthy of attention, especially as there is only one God," she said.
"It is a call to all religious denominations and I believe it will not encroach on the views of atheists in some way," Moskalkova said.
Russian State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin told reporters on Monday about the wording of a president-submitted constitutional amendment that includes a reference to God.
"The Russian Federation, which has a millennia-long history and safeguards the memory of the forefathers who passed the ideals and faith in God to us, as well as the continuity of the development of the Russian state, shall be recognized as historically developed state unity," Volodin said. |
