Religious affiliation in Russia in no way criterion for appointment, election to state posts - Peskov

Moscow, October 29, Interfax - Religious affiliation does not play a defining role in the appointment or election of candidates to government posts in Russia, Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov said.

"Religious affiliation in our country is in no way a criterion for appointment or election to state posts," Peskov told reporters on Thursday.

"We don't have and we cannot have any restrictions on these criteria de jure," he said.

During a meeting with journalists, Peskov's attention was drawn to repeated statements made by Ramzan Kadyrov, the head of Russia's internal republic of Chechnya, who has said he is a Muslim, and he leads the republic as a Muslim. Peskov was asked how important and significant religious preferences are to the Kremlin in appointing candidates to the posts of heads of the regions of the Russian Federation.
