30 October 2020, 11:08Islamist teenager shot dead after attacking police station in Russia's Tatarstan
Moscow, October 30, Interfax - A criminal investigation has been opened on a count of an attempt to stage a terrorist act after a teenager attacked a police station in Kukmor in Russia's internal republic of Tatarstan; the teenager was shot dead by the police, the press service of the Russian Investigative Committee said.
"Following the incident, the [Russian] Investigative Committee's investigative department for the republic of Tatarstan opened a criminal case on a count of an attempt to stage a terrorist act (Part 3 of Article 30, Part 1 of Article 205 of the Russian Criminal Code) and an attempt on the life of an officer of law enforcement agencies (Article 317)," the press service said in a statement published on the committee's website.
A 16-year-old teenager tried to set fire to a police station in the town of Kukmor last night, using a Molotov cocktail, the Investigative Committee said.
"As he was detained, the young man stabbed a police officer at least three times with a knife. Another policeman, after firing several warning shots into the air, had to open fire [in the direction of the teenager]. The attacker died of his wounds before medics arrived," it said.
Investigators are working to establish all circumstances of what happened, it said.
An informed source told Interfax that the teenager, who was born in Russia's internal republic of Bashkortostan, lived in Kukmor and was on a police watch list for his extremist views.
"As he attacked the police officers, he called them 'infidels' and shouted 'Allahu Akbar!'," the source said.
According to Tatarstan's police, "a district police inspector spotted a fire on the ground and glass shards while parking his service car in the compound of the Russian Interior Ministry's department for the Kukmor District of the Republic of Tatarstan" at around 00:30 a.m. on October 30.
"As the fire was put out, an unknown person threw another bottle presumably filled with an inflammable liquid over the fence in the direction of the parking lot, after which he tried to escape," the Russian Interior Ministry's branch for Tatarstan said in a statement published on its website.
Law enforcement officers then began chasing the attacker, it said.
"When officers tracked down the wrongdoer, he started to threaten them with a knife. The young man ignored the multiple orders to stop his unlawful actions. As he was detained, he put up fierce resistance and stabbed one of the policemen several times with a knife," it said.
"In light of this citizen's aggressive and socially dangerous conduct, and in accordance with the law on police, the officers used their service weapons. As a result, the attacker, identified as a local resident, born in 2004, died on the spot from his wounds," it said.
Tatarstan's Interior Minister Lieut. Gen. of Police Artyom Khokhorin arrived at the scene, the Interior Ministry said.
Search and investigative measures to establish all circumstances of the incident are ongoing.
The policeman stabbed by the attacker was hospitalized. His injuries are not life-threatening. |
