Moscow court arrests 2 Jehovah's Witnesses

Moscow, February 15, Interfax - Moscow's Savyolovsky District Court has arrested two members of the Jehovah's Witnesses organization banned in Russia.

The court handed down a measure of restraint on Alexander Serebryakov and Yury Temirbulatov in the form of arrest for a period until April 10, 2021 for each, the court's press service told Interfax on Friday.

The defendants are charged with organizing the activities of an extremist organization, the court said.

On February 10, the Moscow branch of the Russian Investigative Committee reported on the ongoing investigative measures related to the activities of the Administrative Center of Jehovah's Witnesses in Russia.

According to the investigators, in the period from September 2017 until now, "a group of persons, who were aware of the Supreme Court ruling that had taken effect, organized the activity of a local religious division of the aforesaid organization in the north of Moscow."

"Secret meetings were held in an apartment on Dybenko Street; the followers were studying religious books and information from other sources of propaganda of the teachings of Jehovah's Witnesses and engaged in other activities characteristic of this organization," a spokesperson for the Russian Investigative Committee said.

A number of organizers and members of the movement were identified and detained, the Investigative Committee said.
