War in Nagorno-Karabakh in fall 2020 didn't solve conflict - Catholicos of All Armenians
Yerevan, October 13, Interfax - The war in Nagorno-Karabakh in fall 2020 did not solve the problems, but generated new tragedies and caused new problems, Catholicos Karekin II of All Armenians said.
"War is not a method of solving problems, and this war de facto didn't solve problems, but generated new tragedies and caused new problems. It is impossible to make peace using military methods, at gunpoint, it's impossible to achieve solidarity and cooperation while manipulating the prisoner-of-war factor, sowing hatred against Armenians, and threatening on a state level to open transport communications," Karekin II said at a three-party meeting in Moscow with Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia and Caucasus Muslims Board Chairman Allahshukur Pasha-zade.
Armenia hopes that it can overcome these challenges with support from friendly, peace-loving countries, the international community and organizations, he said.
"We also hope that the Azerbaijani authorities in this difficult situation will give up their expansionist ambitions, which may cause a new, bigger war in the region," he said.
Karekin II told Allahshukur Pasha-zade he hopes that "this meeting will yield results through your mediation before the Azerbaijani authorities, in particular, on the solution of humanitarian issues, vital spiritual and religious problems, and also the establishment of peace in the life of our peoples."
Karekin II said there is no alternative to a peaceful solution to the Karabakh conflict "in terms of the establishment of stability and peace, guaranteeing a safe and calm life in the region."
"However, despite the Armenian side's readiness to finally solve issues and all peacekeeping efforts made by the co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, the situation in the region remains alarming and tense due to the humiliating and unacceptable militant rhetoric and unconstructive and ultimative policies of the Azerbaijani authorities," Karekin II said.
He said it is important not to use force, specify the status of Nagorno-Karabakh, release from Azerbaijani captivity Armenian POWs, and stop Azerbaijani encroachments on the state border of Armenia.
