03 July 2006, 14:45Religious organizations could help fight extremism - Berel Lazar
Moscow, July 3, Interfax - Russia's Chief Rabbi Berel Lazar said that extremism can't be defeated globally without the assistance of religious organizations.
"The Group of Eight nations must understand that only through spiritual development and upbringing can we change the world," Lazar told a news conference in Moscow Monday.
"No religious community can exist without state support, while the state cannot exist without religious values. State leaders need assistance in bringing up the younger generation. No society can exist without spiritual values," he said.
"When the world community is being told that a common language should be found with the terrorists, this only means that society is not sufficiently ripe to understand the problems that exist in reality," the rabbi said.
Lazar backed the idea of adding religious subjects to Russian school curriculums.
"These subjects are rarely taught at Russian schools. Meanwhile, they can change children's approach to life. Religious subjects could be taught not only by secular teachers, but also by priests, rabbis and muftis," said Lazar. |
