Another Donbass diocese disagrees with UOC decision to proclaim independence

Moscow, May 31, Interfax - Metropolitan Mitrofan of Gorlovka and Slavyansk has disagreed with the decision of a recent Council of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) to declare its independence.

"I think that decision was wrong (...) I neither support nor approve of it, but I will not do anything to cause harm to our brethren. We pray for both His Beatitude Metropolitan Onufry [of Kiev and All Ukraine] and the Holy Patriarch," Metropolitan Mitrofan told believers in the territories not under Ukrainian control on Tuesday.

The UOC leader did not set any conditions on the matter, and Clause 7 of the Council's resolution allows diocesan bishops to make decisions on their own, he said.

The Gorlovka and Slaviansk Diocese oversees parishes in the northern Donetsk Region. Earlier, the Metropolitan of Donetsk, whose flock mainly resides in the region's south, voiced his disagreement with the results of the UOC Council.

Metropolitan Mitrofan stressed that his diocese remained in unity with the Russian Orthodox Church and expressed his hope that this unity would continue. "We are living by the old charter and praying both for his Beatitude [Onufry] and for our Church in Ukraine," he said.
