07 June 2022, 15:28Russian army averted damage to Sviatogorsk Lavra's historical and Orthodox monuments
Moscow, June 7, Interfax - Despite the fighting, the Russian Armed Forces managed to avert any damage on the grounds of the Sviatogorsk Cultural and Architectural Reserve, Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said.
"Though fighting raged in Sviatogorsk, the Russian military did not allow any damage to be caused to the historical and Orthodox monuments on the grounds of the Holy Dormition Sviatogorsk Lavra," Konashenkov told reporters on Tuesday.
In confirmation of these words, the Russian Defense Ministry released video footage recorded by a drone showing "the current state of the Sviatogorsk Lavra cultural, historical, architectural, and Orthodox monument."
"The Russian Armed Forces are continuing the special operation to liberate Donbass, while also averting the shelling and possible damage of historical and cultural heritage sites," he said.
Monks and residents in Sviatogorsk have confirmed that Ukrainian servicemen set fire to the Sviatogorsk Lavra's All Saints Shrine on June 5, Konashenkov said.
The Defense Ministry said on Monday that "the Russian Armed Forces are completing the liberation of the town of Sviatogorsk in the Donetsk People's Republic and of the territory surrounding it." |
