09 June 2022, 15:28Over half of Russians favor restrictions on migrants' entry into country - senior Kremlin official
Chelyabinsk, June 9, Interfax - The core reason behind interethnic tensions in Russian regions is the situation surrounding migrants, and more than half of Russians interviewed in a recent opinion poll spoke in favor of restricting migrants' entry to the country, deputy head of the Russian presidential administration Magomedsalam Magomedov said.
"Conflicts, high-profile crimes quite often become a ground for launching ethnic mobilization to put pressure on the authorities [...] Nevertheless, the migration-related situation remains the most noticeable reason for interethnic tensions in Russian regions, including the Ural Federal District. This is the most acute issue today," Magomedov said in Chelyabinsk on Thursday at a conference on the implementation of the State National Policy Strategy in the Ural Federal District.
Across Russia, "each fifth respondent spoke of a negative attitude to migrants," he said.
"Fifty-six percent of people spoke of the need to restrict entry for migrants. Meanwhile, residents of the Ural Federal District along with the Central Federal District are among the fiercest supporters of restrictions on the inflow of migrants, and their numbers keep increasing. Today's migration-related situation poses a threat both of an external nature, i.e. the arrival of criminal and extremist groups, and of an internal nature - the formation of ethnic enclaves, higher crimes rates, excessive competition on the workforce market, and an additional burden on the social sector," he said.
"Clearly, it causes society to start to resent migrants and provokes extremist sentiments to emerge along the lines of interethnic and interfaith discord," Magomedov said. |
