22 July 2022, 18:06The Federation of Jewish Communities concerned about plans to eliminate Sochnut in Russia
Moscow, July 22, Interfax – The Federation of Jewish Communities of Russia (FJCR) expressed concern about plans to liquidate the Sochnut Jewish Agency in court due to violation of Russian legislation.
"It seems to me very upsetting news, regardless of what the reasons for such a decision are," the head of the Department for Public Relations of FJCR Boruch Gorin told Interfax.
He noted that the Jewish community will wait for the court's decision. At the same time, "even if it's a matter of real legal problems, the governments of Russia and Israel should have worked out measures to correct the shortcomings, and not prohibit the activities of the Jewish Agency in Russia," Gorin said.
The representative of FJCR pointed out that the Sochnut agency is of great importance not only for the repatriation of Jews to their historical homeland, but also for relations between Israel and Russia, Israel and the diaspora. "Historically, this is one of the most important institutions of the Jewish community - I would say, the Jews of the whole world," he stressed.
For this reason, "such an event, whether of a legal or political nature, obviously seems to be a setback in relations between Russia and Israel, not only between governments, but also between countries," Gorin concluded.
Earlier on Thursday, it became known that the Moscow department of the Ministry of Justice asked the Basmanny Court to make a decision on the liquidation of the autonomous non-profit organization Jewish Agency Sochnut, which deals with repatriation to Israel. The conversation on the claim is scheduled for July 28. The Ministry of Justice believes that Sochnut violates Russian legislation. |
