Kremlin not opposed to Pope engagement in looking for ways of settlement in Ukraine

Moscow, October 25, Interfax - The Kremlin is not opposed to the possibility that the United States and Pope Francis might be involved in settlement efforts for Ukraine, but is aware that Ukrainian law prohibits any negotiations with Russia, Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov said.

Journalists asked Peskov on Tuesday to comment on reports that French President Emmanuel Macron urged Pope Francis to call Russian President Vladimir Putin to help settle the situation in Ukraine and invited the United States to join the negotiations.

"If all of this is part of efforts toward looking for a possible settlement, this can be viewed positively. But on the other hand, this statement says nothing about someone having to call [Ukrainian] President [Vladimir] Zelensky and look into the legal basis that prohibits any negotiations with the Russian side," he said.

"We are ready to discuss all of this with the Americans, with the French, and with the Pontiff. Russia is open to all contacts, but we must bear in mind that Ukraine has codified the non-continuation of negotiations," he said.

Media reported earlier that Macron asked Pope Francis to call Putin and Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia to promote a settlement of the crisis in Ukraine. The pope received Macron in the Vatican on Monday.
