19 July 2006, 14:58Unknown persons defiled Menorah in Babiy Yar
Kiev, July 19, Interfax - A huge Menorah was defiled at the former Jewish cemetery in Babiy Yar in Kiev on Tuesday night.
People connect this extreme action with the war in Lebanon, yet law enforcement officers insist that it was perpetrated by drug addicts, Religious Information Service of Ukraine reports.
The vandals almost destroyed a stone at the foot of the monument, smashed a window and its tile setting. The earlier attacks, including the last one some years ago, were not so large-scaled.
According to a Ukrainian paper Segodnya, a cleaner of the park was the first to see the smashed tiles at 07.30 a.m. and reported the accident.
The Menorah monument was installed in Babiy Yar in Kiev in the 1990s in commemoration of all people killed by the Fascists. Over 100,000 citizens of Kiev found their last refuge here, including prisoners of war, prisoners of Gestapo and the Syrets concentration camp. Some 35, 000 Jews were shot to death here in two days.
Each year in the end of September - beginning of October people come to the Menorah monument to commemorate the of Nazi terror victims. |
