Russian church's ties with Vatican have positive potential - Alexy II

Moscow, October 2, Interfax - The Russian Orthodox Church and the Roman Catholic Church today have many avenues for cooperation and areas where their positions on key contemporary issues coincide, Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Alexy II said.

Speaking at a meeting with Archbishop of Milan Cardinal Dionigi Tettamanzi in Moscow's St. Daniil Monastery on Monday, Alexy II said he is "convinced that good relations and mutual support will contribute to the further development of cooperation on key modern issues between the Russian Orthodox Church and the Roman Catholic Church."

The two churches' opinions on a wide variety of problems of morality, bioethics and family values coincide, the patriarch said.

Alexy II also expressed his gratitude for a gift presented by Cardinal Tettamanzi to the Russian Orthodox Church - a silver reliquary for the ashes of St. Ambrose of Milan, St, Marcellina and St. Bishop Dionysius, as well as a collection of St. Ambrose's books in Latin and their version in Italian, which, the patriarch said, "will doubtlessly prove useful to the theologians of our church."

Alexy II also praised long-time good personal contacts between priests of the Russian Orthodox Church and the Milan archbishop's office.
