Kadyrov says not against polygamy

Moscow, October 5, Interfax - Chechen Prime Minister Ramzan Kadyrov has said he is not against polygamy, considering the demographic problems that his republic is experiencing, but vowed not to try to impose his opinion on anybody.

"I don't see anything bad in someone having a second wife if he has enough strength and resources to keep two wives and raise up children," Kadyrov said in an interview with Interfax.

"The war has dealt a severe blow to the demographic situation. Tens of thousands of young men have been killed. I mean, thousands of young women turned widows, thousands of girls with no chance to become somebody's wife or mother, because young women outnumber young men by tens of thousands," he said.

He insisted that nobody can be forced to have several wives.

"It's been reported that I am trying to introduce polygamy. How can you force a man to have two wives? Nobody bothers to think about that," he said.
