Moscow Patriarchate opens parish in New Delhi

Moscow, December 27, Interfax - An Orthodox parish in New Delhi named after St. Thomas has been included in the Moscow Patriarchate's jurisdiction.

The Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church made this decision on Tuesday based on the results of Metropolitan Kirill of Smolensk and Kaliningrad's visit to India earlier this month.

The Moscow Patriarchate department for external church relations (DECR) told Interfax that the parish in the Indian capital was in fact formed some time ago and includes primarily Russians and people coming from other CIS countries living there.

Clerics from the DECR have regularly visited India in the past several years to conduct services at the Russian Embassy on major religious holidays. Orthodox diplomats from other countries accredited in New Delhi have also attended these services.
