Putin brings name-day greeting to Alexy II and discusses with him plans for using 'Russian' plot of land on the Jordan

Moscow, February 26, Interfax - Russian President Vladimir Putin wished happy birthday to Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow and All Russia who was 78 on Friday.

The head of the state arrived at the patriarchal working residence in Chisty Lane in the middle of the day. He presented the primate of the Orthodox Church with white roses and a painting A Winter Scenery by a contemporary Russian artist.

'Congratulations on the double holiday - your birthday and the 23d of February', Putin said.

Alexy II, on his part, congratulated the president on the Day of the Defender of the Fatherland. 'You are the main defender', the patriarch said.

The president and the patriarch discussed Putin's recent visit to Jordan, where Russia has been granted a plot of land for permanent use on the Jordan River, where Jesus Christ was baptized.

'Recently I have been to Jordan and saw those places. The hectare is situated in a good and a very beautiful place just at the Jordan's turn', Putin.

Asked by the patriarch, he explained that the land would now be a property of the Russian State.

'We will have to discuss what is to be done there and how', the president said.

Alexy II suggested that a pilgrims' house with a chapel be built on that land.
