19 March 2007, 15:00The Passion According to Matthew by Bishop Hilarion of Vienna and Austria to be presented for the first time at Moscow Conservatoire
Moscow, March 19, Interfax - The Passion According to Matthew composed by Bishop Hilarion (Alfeyev) of Vienna and Austria is to be first performed by the State Tretyakov Gallery's choir and the Chaikovsky Symphony Orchestra at the Moscow Conservatoire's Grand Hall on March 27.
'The Passion According to Matthew is a monumental work for soloists, a choir and an orchestra, composed on the basis of the canonical text of the Gospel of St. Matthew and liturgical texts of the Orthodox Church', Bishop Hilarion's press service has reported on Monday. Bishop Hilarion represents the Moscow Patriarchate at European international organizations.
This work composed by His Grace Hilarion in autumn 2006 consists of 48 pieces including recitatives, arias for soprano, contralto, tenor and basso with orchestra, choruses, fugues for an orchestra and a choir. The total duration of the composition is about two hours.
Participating in the recital will be 145 musicians including five soloists from Russia and Austria, 70 singers and 70 musicians. The first performance will be conducted by National Artist of Russia Vladimir Fedoseyev.
The performance of The Passion According to Matthew has been blessed by Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow and All Russia.
A TV version of the concert will be broadcast during by the Kultura Russian channel during the Passion Week.
A recital of The Passion According to Mathew by the same artists will be given on March 29 at the Auditorium Conciliazione in Rome.
Bishop Hilarion is a graduate of the Gnesins Academy of Music in Moscow and the Moscow State Conservatoire, where he studied composition at Vladimir Dovgan's class.
His All-Night Vigil and Divine Liturgy were performed by the State Tretyakov Gallery's choir conducted by Russia's Honored Artist Alexey Puzakov at the Conservatoire's Grand Hall on December 7, 2006.
