27 March 2007, 14:55Verdict against four Tobolsk Islamists takes effect
Tyumen, March 27, Interfax - A verdict handed down to four members of the international extremist organization Hizb ut-Tahrir by the Tobolsk city court in February 2007 has entered into force.
The organization's Tobolsk cell was exposed on May 11 by security services and local police. Four members were caught when they were holding a secret meeting, the Tyumen regional security department's press service reported.
An investigation revealed that the Tobolsk cell was formed in the summer of 2004 to conduct propaganda in youth groups. Followers would gather for secret meetings to read extremist literature and to study methods used by law enforcement services, as well as ways to counter them. They were also taught methods of recruiting new members.
Earlier reports said that the cell leaders, Alim Timkanov, born in 1975, and Rustam Nazyrov, born in 1979, were sentenced to, respectively, two years and five months and two years in a general prison for organizing extremist activities.
Two other members Artur Nabeyev, born in 1984, and Vladislav Boikov, born in 1987, were sentenced to 14 months and 12 months in a penal settlement. |
