The Christian indifferent to politics and public life betrays his faith - Lombardi president

Moscow, June 7, Interfax - Every Christian lay person must have an active position in society, the Italian province of Lombardy President Roberto Formigoni opines.

‘The Christian person cannot be disinterested in politics. If the believer is indifferent to his neighborhood or to the society around him, he betrays his faith. The Christian must actively express his life position,’ Formigoni said in the Spiritual Library cultural center in Moscow.

He disagreed that political involvement was incompatible with being Christian and said that the modern politics was not only for ‘dirty handed’ people.

Modern European states’ secular policies, he said, puts no obstacle but rather helps Christian to be involved in political life and run for leading positions. The very idea of secularism ‘originates in the Christian tradition’ when Jesus urged ‘to render unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s; and unto God the things that are God’s,’ he said.

‘The secular state respects its every citizen’s choice. Christian politicians guarantee that all choices are respected and freedom of those who have different worldviews are safeguarded,’ Formigoni said.

According to him, the guaranteed freedom of opinion is the essence of the modern politics. Both believers and non-believers should ‘put the human being in the center recognizing his ability to make and correct mistakes.’
