17 October 2007, 11:06New head of Catholic archdiocese in Moscow became believer thanks to Russian icon
Moscow, October 17, Interfax - Priest Paolo Pezzi, who was recently appointed to head the Catholic archdiocese with the center in Moscow, has said he became a believer thanks to a Russian icon, which he received as a gift when he was young, according to the Moscow Patriarchate.
Father Paolo Pezzi met with Metropolitan Kirill of Smolensk and Kaliningrad, head of the Moscow Patriarchate department for external church relations, in Moscow on Tuesday.
"During the conversation, Father Paolo said he was given a replica of Andrey Rublyov's icon The Savior of Zvenigorod when he was serving in the army. Although he did not have the experience of contacts with Orthodox believers later in Italy, Father Pezzi considers it providential that God has led him to Russia now," the source in department for external church relations told Interfax.
Father Paolo and Metropolitan Kirill discussed the current condition of relations between the Orthodox and Roman Catholic Churches.
"The talk was about the need for interaction between the two Churches in promoting traditional Christian values. The parties expressed their preparedness for further developing their dialogue and eliminating all problems obstructing it," it said.
