21 November 2007, 15:06Russia’s Supreme Court affirms the St. Petersburg City Court decision to close down regional scientology organization
St. Petersburg, November 21, Interfax – The Supreme Court of the Russian Federation examined the appeal against the decision of the St. Petersburg City Court to close down the Scientology Center public organization.
According to the press-service of the prosecutor’s office in St. Petersburg, Russia’s supreme judicial instance considered the decision of the ‘Northern capital’ City Court reasonable, left it unchanged and did not remedy the appeal of the organization’s representative.
As was reported, the St. Petersburg City Court fully satisfied the claim of the city prosecutor, who required closing down the Scientology Center in St. Petersburg.
Inspection carried out by the Justice Ministry’s Chief Directorate for St. Petersburg and Leningrad Region founded out that the organization violated the acting legislation of the Russian Federation.
‘According to the charter of the Scientology Center, the objective of the organization is propaganda of the philosophical ideas and teachings of L. Ron Hubbard as guidance for a human being in life. However, propaganda of Hubbard's ideas and teachings was in effect supplanted by unlicensed educational activities that were conducted on a paid basis and fell outside the law of the Russian Federation on education’, the prosecutor's office told Interfax earlier.
Moreover, the Center was engaging in ‘auditing’ and ‘purification’, activities that its charter did not prescribe and that meant putting Hubbard's ideas into practice rather than propagandizing them. It advertised those practices as healthcare services without holding a license for them.
The Center had provided unlicensed consultant services on professional proficiency and ran tests to find out people's personal characteristics. The results of the tests were used in enrolling new members into the organization.
The Scientology Center official charter was violated, when the underage persons were recruited in organization, took part in the activities envisaged for the organization’s members only, and studied the aspects of Hubbard’s teaching, the prosecutor's office added. |
