Alexy II urges Orthodox govns to develop relations based on common spiritual tradition

Moscow, December 18, Interfax – Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow and All Russia has urged executive authorities of Orthodox states to develop cooperation in politics, economy and culture more actively.

‘Culture ministers of Orthodox countries met in Athens in July. It would be valuable to organize such meetings between Tourism, Education and Foreign Ministers’, Alexy II has stated Tuesday during his conversation with Greek prime-minister Konstantinos Karamanlis in St. Daniel’s Monastery in Moscow.

The Patriarch believes the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly of Orthodoxy to be ‘a very efficient forum for Orthodoxy-based cooperation between MPs’ and noted it was also important for the representatives of executive authorities to join it.

Alexy II is convinced that Karamanlis’s visit will contribute to further development of Russian-Greek relations and provide an impetus for wider economic, business and cultural bonds between the two countries.

‘I call our nations fraternal because bonds of brotherly love have linked us for many centuries thanks to the Holy Orthodoxy’, the primate of the Russian Church stressed.

He also noted that Russia grieved over the disease of the Greek primate Archbishop Christodoulos of Athens and wished him the soonest recovery.

Karamanlis stressed that Alexy II played an important part in strengthening basis of the Orthodox faith both in Russia and around the globe. He also pointed to the centuries-long spiritual and cultural ties between Russian and Greece and considered Orthodoxy ‘the most solid bridge for communication of our Churches and peoples’.
