Gay activists to hold parade in Moscow on May 31

Moscow, January 24, Interfax - Gay parade organizers will make their third attempt to hold their parade in Moscow on May 31, parade organizer Nikolay Alexeyev told Interfax.

On Thursday, they formed the organizing committee for the march in support of tolerant attitude and observation of the rights and freedoms of homosexuals in Russia, he said. The street action is to be preceded by an international human rights conference dedicated to the same subject, he said.

The organizing committee of the third Moscow gay parade will include ten people: Russian lesbian movement leader Yevgeniya Debryanskaya, Bashkir parliament deputy Edward Murzin, Transnational Radical Party activist Nikolay Khramov, Free Radicals movement coordinator Sergey Konstantinov, head of the Apostolic Reform Orthodox Church Alexey Skrypnikov-Daraki and others.

This year the Moscow gay parade was timed to the 15th anniversary of the abolishment of the criminal prosecution of homosexual relations in Russia which happened on May 27, 1993.

Alexeyev said that notification of holding a march will be submitted to the Moscow mayor two weeks in advance as required by the law.

Alexeyev recalled that the case on banning the first gay parade in Moscow in May 2006 has been in the European Court of Human Rights for a year. The preparation of the complaint on the banning of the second parade in May 2007 has practically concluded and will soon be sent to Strasbourg, he said.
