Orthodox lecturer believes Dostoyevsky had an effect on Harry Potter

Moscow, February 27, Interfax - Both Dostoyevsky's Raskolnikov and Harry Potter's negative hero Volan De Mort have the same signs of demonic frenzy, the Moscow St. Philaret Institute's lecturer Semyon Zaidenberg believes.

"The extreme degree of subordination to the evil is demonic frenzy, diabolism, when a person starts serving the evil and there's nothing left of him. Literature has a plenty of brilliant characters, the recent is Volan De Mort from Harry Potter, he is a Raskolnikov developed," he said in an interview published by the Ogonyok magazine.

According to Zaidenberg, Volan De Mort "splits his soul through a murder and this rupture is a sign of demonism. A person splits himself and stops existing in a certain way, he isn't responsible for his actions anymore."

"Rowling pretty well realized Dostoyevsky's prophesy about a person who consciously brings himself to a rupture which is an extreme degree of separation from his core and from the Lord. Such a person was a novelty for the 19th century, but has become a common figure in the 20th century," the lecturer thinks.

He believes that "today people feel the necessity of mass exorcism as the society is widely infected with evil. The only question is how to do it."
