Archpriest Vsevolod Chaplin wants Russia to become "Byzantium without its faults"

Moscow, February 29, Interfax - Deputy chief of the Moscow Patriarchate Department for External Church Relations Archpriest Vsevolod Chaplin said that Russia need to keep Byzantine heritage in order not to leave history arena.

"Italian professor Silvio Ferrari, a prominent specialist on church and state relations, once said: Byzantine Empire fell apart because it couldn't take in other civilizations. Rome survived as it managed to inculturate barbarians," Fr. Vsevolod writes in the next part of his Scraps published in the Pravoslavnaya Moskva newspaper.

According to him, Byzantium didn't vanish without a trace, "it has reincarnated in Russia."

"And it survived to some degree as it managed to covert many peoples in its faith. In both cases, Roman and ours, it happened because society had a force to convey its faith despite the limits of state and ethnos," the priest said.

"This force is the Church of Christ, which "realizes that life of every state and nation is limited in space and time and strives to preach to "the far and the near", even to its enemies."

"May the Lord make us such a force. It will make Russia "Byzantium without its faults" that will never become the ash of history. Let it be!" Fr. Vsevolod wished.
