12 March 2008, 14:28Closure of TV channels unlikely to solve problem of immorality on television - Moscow Patriarchate spokesman
Moscow, March 12, Interfax - The closure of TV channels, including 2x2, is unlikely to be effective in opposing immorality on television, said Moscow Patriarchate spokesman priest Mikhail Prokopenko.
"I would not say that absolutely all cartoons shown on 2x2 are immoral and offensive. In fact, some of the cartoons shown there can even be called Christian and promoting family values - take, for instance, The Simpsons, a cartoon series that I, for one, really like," Fr. Mikhail told Interfax-Religion on Wednesday.
"The closure of a TV channel may look like someone's resounding victory, but this is unlikely to resolve the problem," the priest said in comments on an address by the Advisory Board of the Russian Protestant Churches to Prosecutor General Yury Chaika, in which it insisted on stripping the 2x2 TV channel of its broadcasting license for showing what it perceives as immoral cartoons.
"Yes, some cartoons shown on the 2x2 television channel are striking in their stupidity, primitive tastelessness, and cruelty. But why are the Protestants focusing all their concerns solely on the 2x2 television channel? Do the channels called federal ones really show less violence, cruelty, and things bordering on pornography?" he said. |
